After signing as a teenager, Arbeloa came through the youth ranks at Real Madrid, skippering the club's B team before joining the senior squad and playing twice for the first team. The right-back signed for Deportivo in July 2006 after four years in Madrid and made 21 appearances for them before arriving at Anfield on January 31, 2007. He made his Barclays Premiership debut on February 10 against Newcastle United as a substitute for Jermaine Pennant.

Reds pull off Spanish double

Liverpool completed the double deal to land Spanish duo Alvaro Arbeloa and Francisco Manuel Duran before the closure of the transfer window.
