Former England Under-21 international Ashton joined from Norwich City for a club record fee of £7million in January 2006. He scored seven goals in 16 Barclays Premiership appearances for the Canaries after moving to Carrow Road in January 2005 from Crewe. The versatile and powerful striker made his debut for Crewe aged just 16 in 2000. He quickly progressed up the international ladder, scoring three goals for England Under-19s at the European Championships in 2002, before notching on his debut for the Under-21s against Holland in 2004.
