Professionally debuted in 2002 for the Brazilian club Palmeiras. The young keeper made more then a 100 appearances for the club and was soon linked with transfers to various European clubs as his reputation mounted. In July 2008 he was one of the most highly rated keepers in Brazil and transferred to Liverpool where he took over the Number 1 shirt last worn by Jerzy Dudek
