With a promising start to his career at Reading, including various loan deals and an experience placement to Arsenal, Ashdown signed for Portsmouth at the beginning of 2004. Following an injury to then number 1 Shaka Hislop he got his first starting place in the same season. Over the intervening years until 2006 he faced stiff competition for the first team position however is now flourishing under David James
